Roles and Permissions
Understand how access is assigned across the Optra IoT Platform Platform.
Optra uses role-based access control to determine what each user can see and do in the platform. Your assigned role affects which tiles, menus, settings, and operational tools are available after sign-in. In practice, this means your experience is tailored to your responsibilities, while administrators keep governance and access aligned with organizational policy.
Role assignments are managed by your organization and are typically set during user provisioning. Some deployments use local authentication, while others use Azure AD or another identity provider. Regardless of the sign-in method, roles determine the scope of access once you are inside the platform.

System administrators manage role assignment and licensing selections.
Platform Functionality by Role
The table below summarizes the main platform capabilities, the role typically responsible for each capability, and the description of what that capability supports.

| User Administrator | User Management | Add users to the platform using basic auth or integrating with Azure Active Directory (AD). This allows you to assign users to predefined roles. |
| Fleet Manager or Support Agent | Device Management | Onboard IoT and non-IoT devices, manage fleets of devices, monitor device telemetry. |
| Data Scientist or Fleet Manager | Rules and Action Management | Low-code/No-code way to set up rules on device data and take specific actions, such as creating a case in Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365). |
| System Administrator or Integration Developer | Integrations Management | Set up and monitor integrations from the Optra IoT Platform to external systems such as ServiceNow and D365. |
| Fleet Manager or Data Analyst | Analytics and Dashboard Management | Link dashboards in Microsoft PowerBI and Tableau to be displayed on the platform. |
| System Administrator or Integration Developer | Platform Secrets Management | This is available only for administrators to store secrets used for integrating with Azure AD and other systems. |
| System Administrator | Organizations | Options for setting up multiple organizations and accounts to access the platform. |
| Data Scientist or MLOps Engineer | AI/ML Model Hub | Allow the user to tune the model parameters iteratively before deploying the model to production. |
Working With Roles
When you are assigned a role, the platform determines which sections appear in the left navigation and which actions are available on each page. If you do not see a feature that is described here, it may not be enabled for your account or organization.
